Planet Abled: can it sustain its first-mover advantage and scale-up? 2021

This paper aims to teach how to use the Value Proposition Canvas and Business Model Canvas to evaluate opportunities; understand the similarities and differences between social and commercial enterprises; and recognize the challenges of balancing social missions with financial goals. While Planet Abled shows potential for growth, it faces competition from major travel providers. The company must address several dilemmas: sustaining and scaling the enterprise, and balancing the social mission with financial sustainability.

Events & Conferences

Stakeholder Convention, United Nations Vienna, 2023

Planet Abled hosted a stakeholders convention at United Nations Vienna, aimed at discussing disability laws in developing countries, what works and what doesn’t work, and how they differ from emerging countries. Most initiatives and standards around the world focus on disabled communities in developed nations, while the majority of disabled people reside in emerging countries.

We brought together representatives from hotel chains, tourism boards, museums, and individuals with lived experiences of various disabilities from both developed and emerging countries. The consultation placed a strong emphasis on ensuring equitable representation and inclusivity, creating a heightened awareness of the unique challenges faced by individuals with disabilities in different socio-economic contexts, and identified key areas for improvement and innovation.

Moving forward, these insights will serve as the foundation for the development of a global standard of inclusive tourism that addresses the needs of all people, moving the focus from compliance to aspiration.

Planet Abled presents Access 2 Travel

Our goal has always been to protect the right of everyone to travel.

Since 2017 had been declared by the United Nations as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism, Planet Abled organized the “Access 2 Travel” conference. This conference was a first-of-its-kind, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2030 and bringing the focus of sustainable travel towards accessible travel.

The aim was to raise awareness about an industry that did not exist in India by highlighting the stories of travelers with disabilities. Travelers with and without disabilities had the opportunity to interact with each other and relevant authorities, from government to corporate, to take first steps towards making India a disabled-friendly travel destination.

Attendees included representatives from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment of People with Disabilities and the Ministry of Tourism of India. We also had representatives of five different disabilities from five different countries, discussing their challenges, as well as their good, bad, and ugly experiences.
